WHAT? WHY? HOW?

1. Why does sea-water appears blue?

When sunlight hits the surface of sea or ocean, some of the light gets reflected back, whereas, most of the longer wavelengths such as red, orange and yellow penetrate sea water and get absorbed by the water molecules. So only the shorter wavelengths of light which contain violet and blue colors are reflected back to reach our eyes. Hence the sea water appears blue.

2. How does ironing remove wrinkles from clothes?

Iron uses a combination of heat and pressure to remove wrinkles from the fabrics. First, while ironing the clothes, heat of the iron loosens the bonds between the long chain polymer molecules in the fibers of the fabric. After that, while these molecules are hot, the pressure applied by the iron straightens up the fibers which hold their reformed shape as they cool down.

3. Why do we blink our eyes?

Blinking helps in lubricating and cleansing of eyes. Every time we blink our eyes, the tear glands secrete the mucous that gets spread all over the surface of eyes. This not only helps in moistening the eyes, but also flushes out the dust particles. Blinking also helps to keep the eyes safe from the damaging stimuli like bright light and other foreign irritants.

4. How does baking powder makes the cake spongy?

Baking powder is mixed with the flour. When water is added to this flour to make dough, baking powder undergoes a chemical reaction during which carbon dioxide gas is produced. This carbon dioxide gas gets trapped into the dough and bubbles out which causes the cake to rise making it soft and spongy.
